Let's face it. The world's a pretty crappy place. Even crappier when you're a kid with that whole process of "finding yourself" in the middle of chaos. But mutants are different than other kids. Instead of puberty and waking up to find out that your voice has dropped two octaves overnight, mutants wake up to find they've grown an extra tail or two. Or in Ari's case, waking up to find out that his consciousness is not actually tied down to his mind.

It's a bit complicated. Involves a lot of abstract ideas about the human soul. But the long story short is that his consciousness is tugged along by anguish. If there's something terrible happening anywhere in the world, chances are, he'll be able to see it. He doesn't choose to do it. They just hit him like a ton of bricks, and the more despair there is, the more realistic the vision. Sometimes, he'll hear it too. If he's really lucky, he'll feel it. And if he's won the jackpot that day, he'll be able to hear their thoughts.

The world is a pretty crappy place. Everyone knows that.
But most people can turn off Fox News whenever they want to.
